Hi {{first_name || BSOC Community}}! 👋🏻

In this fortnight’s BSOC Bulletin, we give you some tips on how to leverage your census date and some practical advice to prepare yourself for this internship season.

Read on to hear about good mate Priaav and how BSOC is partnering with UCC to bring together a case competition workshop for those who might feel they need some help with case comp prep.

📈 AUSCORP CAREER ADVICE

Most people don't know you can enrol into a course, access all the content, download the readings, review the assessments and then drop it before census date without it ever appearing on your transcript or costing you a cent in HECS. Used strategically, it is one of the more underrated moves you can pull each term.

Census dates also mean that you can trial a subject you're unsure about before committing. You can access course materials that are useful for interviews or projects in your actual degree. You can also enrol in something as a backup and swap into it later if another subject turns out to be harder than expected - though if you leave it too long you'll be four weeks behind and that's its own problem.

But how do you know if you should drop a subject? What do your remaining assessments weigh, which assessments are now a sunk cost, and is there a realistic path to a mark that doesn’t impede on your other subjects. You do need to consider if that means you’re now underloading and how that impacts your set graduation year.

Never listen to that person who says to just “enjoy first year!”. A Credit average by the end of your second year would require 2 years of straight High Distinctions to pull you up to a Distinction. Early marks compound, which means a rough first year is harder to recover from than it looks at the time.

A strategic withdrawal before census is not gaming the system. It is just understanding how the system actually works.

AUSCORP TAKEAWAY

An extended degree with a better WAM does you way more benefit than rushing a graduation just because you’re too scared to tell your parents you’re still figuring out what you want to do for work.

That extra “year”, means more internships, more work experience, and more time to make the mistakes that stop you from getting trapped in a role you hate with your guts.

📝 PUBS EDITION | INTERNSHIP APPLICATION SEASON

Internship season has finally begun. Applications are already open across consulting, accounting and FMCG with many of our sponsors now recruiting for Summer Vacationer roles. Firms such as EY, BDO and P&G have begun accepting applications with more roles continuing to appear across platforms like GradConnection and Prosple.

With so many opportunities continuing to open up, it can start to feel overwhelming quickly. New roles appear every week, deadlines approach quickly and it can start to feel like the best strategy is simply apply everywhere.

But applications are not a numbers game.

Why Internships Matter

Internships provide exposure to industries and career paths before graduation, allowing students to see what working in a particular field actually looks like while applying classroom learning in a real-world setting. Whether it be analysing financial data in an accounting firm, contributing to marketing initiatives on product launches or supporting consulting teams on engagements, placements help bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Just as importantly, internships allow students to explore. Many of us have no idea which career path we want to pursue. Vacationer roles provide a chance to test different industries, develop new skills and better understand the type of work and environment that suits you.

The Trap of Applying to Everything

When multiple roles open at the same time, it can feel safer to apply everywhere and hope one of them hits. Students often end up submitting dozens of applications, rushing through cover letters and recycling responses to application questions. However, this “spray and pray” approach rarely produces strong results.

Submitting large numbers of rushed applications often leads to generic response, weaker submissions and burnout from trying to balance recruiting with university commitments. HR teams can quickly recognise when an application has been thoughtfully prepared compared to when it has been submitted as part of a mass application strategy. In reality, a small number of well-prepared applications will almost certainly outperform dozens of rushed ones.

Remember that quality beats quantity.

Practical Tips

A more intentional strategy can make internship season far more manageable.

  • Recording application deadlines, role details and recruitment stages;

  • Applying to roles that align with your interests or strengths;

  • Short conversations with former interns can provide insight into the work, team culture and application process that you won’t find online;

  • Take time to refine your motivations, adjust your resume and ensure your responses reflect a genuine interest.

Internship season can feel intense, but it doesn’t have to. By approaching the process thoughtfully and focusing on what truly interests you, the experience becomes far more manageable and far more rewarding.
