Hi {{first_name || BSOC Community}}! 👋🏻

Term 1 has barely started and somehow it’s already grad and internship season again (late Feb to mid March). If that stresses you out at all, then we’re doing something right.

This month’s BSOC Bulletin is your gentle nudge to start your applications, polish your master resumé and get your LinkedIn sorted before the Term 1 assessments blindside you.

Plus we’ve got an O-Week recap, a charity spotlight, a BSOC human of the week and a few very good excuses to leave the library (pizza, basketball and a gold coin BBQ).

BSOC and The Aussie Corporate Team

📈 AUSCORP CAREER ADVICE

It’s that time of year again. Applications start opening from late February through to mid March and if you wait until stuvac hits, you’re already behind. Both graduate and internship seasons in Australia fly by pretty quick and you never want to be the person who hears about it for the first time when everyone is already organising time to do the psychometric testing together.

Block out 5 to 10 hours a week, track all the key dates for all the big names and treat applications like a subject before your workload explodes. This is just to get practice because you’re just one of 3,000 other applicants. You just need to know the process. Does it matter if you’re not a penultimate? If it doesn’t matter to all the other students already applying, why are you disadvantaging yourself?

At some point, everyone has the same stacked resume. Commerce-related degree. Distinction WAM. Case comps. Subcoms, this and that. All that stuff is STANDARD. What differentiates you is what you’re doing outside the classroom, particularly extracurriculars. Leadership roles, sport, volunteering, side projects and your genuine interests. Travelling overseas shows curiosity. Working at Maccas shows resilience and that admin role with your aunty shows determination. That adds more value than that paragraph introducing yourself with buzzwords at the top of your resume (please don’t be that person).

Keep it clean. Structure should be: name, education, work experience, extracurriculars, interests. One page. Get rid of the chunky “Skills” section filled with vague adjectives - we’ll know your skills based on what experience you include in your resume. Nobody is going to hire you just because you said you’re “hardworking” or a “team player.” By the end of February you should have one master resumé ready to tailor and a LinkedIn profile photo that doesn’t look like it was cropped out from your Year 12 formal.

What makes you different isn’t going to be big company names written with AI dot points, it’s going to be your own preparation.

📝 PUBS EDITION: BSOC O-WEEK RECAP

Hey everyone! I hope that O-Week was just as fun as you thought it’d be. Definitely the best way to start the new uni year. Despite the pouring rain or scorching 30° weather, I hope we all made the most out of our O-Weeks by checking out as many stalls and societies, stocking up on freebies, merch and food.

Hopefully you all visited our stall last week and were able to grab some freebies or a totebag… We were giving out an abundance of our partnership vouchers ranging from Ni Hao Bar, Escape Rooms, HyperKarting and food vouchers that you should DEFINITELY NOT skip over, and use to your advantage! If you’re a first year student, don’t forget to have a look inside your totes if you haven't. There is some valuable information in our first year’s guides and flyers that’ll help you settle into your first term.

We’d like to thank everyone who supported the UNSW Business Society stall during O-Week and took part in our Plinko game. With your support, we were able to successfully raise $722 for our Philanthropy partner, Make-A-Wish Australia, helping them continue their incredible work of granting life-changing wishes to children living with critical illnesses. Check out for your inboxes as well, as our largest donation winner will receive our limited edition, one and only UNSW Business School Monopoly Set!

Just because O-Week is over, here at BSOC we’ve got plenty of things to get keen for! Our upcoming Peer Mentoring sessions and Subcommittee Recruitment applications will start this week and our sold out O-Week Camp is happening this weekend. Thank you everybody for the great support you’ve shown us at O-Week selling out our tickets so quickly and can’t wait for the term ahead!!!

🎗️ PHILANTHROPIC SPACE: BUSH HERITAGE

This February, the UNSW Business Society’s Philanthropy Portfolio is proud to spotlight Bush Heritage Australia, a leading environmental charity working to protect and restore Australia’s most precious natural landscapes 🌏🌿

About the Charity:
Bush Heritage is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to safeguarding native wildlife, threatened ecosystems, and biodiversity across the country. They purchase and manage land of high conservation value, ensuring it is permanently protected from development.

Additionally, Bush Heritage partners with Indigenous communities, scientists, and local landholders to restore damaged ecosystems, protect endangered species, and build climate resilience across Australia’s diverse environments from grasslands and woodlands to wetlands and outback habitats 🦘🌾

In the face of climate change and habitat loss, their mission is critical. Every hectare protected means safer habitats for native species, stronger ecosystems, and a more sustainable future for generations to come.

How you can help:

  • Donate: All gold coin donations from the Welcome Back BBQ will go directly towards Bush Heritage’s conservation work, helping protect native habitats and endangered species.

  • Learn and spread awareness: Taking the time to learn about Bush Heritage’s mission and sharing their work with others helps amplify their impact and encourages more people to care about protecting Australia’s natural heritage.

If you’d like to support this incredible cause, join us at our Welcome Back BBQ 🌭🎉

You’re invited to apply to Portal, a Jane Street program, in Sydney, Australia!

WHO: Quantitative and technical students who are currently enrolled at universities in Australia and New Zealand
WHEN: Thursday, 9 April - Sunday, 12 April, 2026
WHERE: Sydney, Australia

Deadline to apply:
Sunday, 8 March, 2026 @ 11:59pm

This April, Jane Street is bringing Portal, an immersive program, to Sydney, Australia. We invite university students in Australia and New Zealand to participate in this multi-day event, designed to provide a deeper understanding of our work as a quantitative trading firm. Selected participants will engage in strategic games, technical activities, and insightful talks that showcase the analytical and problem-solving skills we use in trading and technology.

Participants will arrive in Sydney on the evening of Thursday, 9 April, and can depart either on the evening of Sunday, 12 April, or anytime on Monday, 13 April. Jane Street will provide all travel to and from Sydney, as well as meals, accommodations, and social events.

Portal has two different program tracks students can apply for:
Trading & Research — Students will learn about mathematical and financial topics such as probability, market structure, and arbitrage through a combination of short lectures, group games, and mock trading sessions.
Software Engineering — Students will learn about the concepts, tools, and skills that we use in our everyday work through talks and hands-on activities. Working together with full-time Jane Street developers, they'll build experience with programming fundamentals, software design principles, and development practices that are used throughout the industry.

Our programs provide valuable opportunities to explore the technical aspects of quantitative trading and software engineering. Students who participate in our Portal program gain practical skills and knowledge, and participating students will be prioritized in our internship interview process. No prior knowledge of finance is required—just an interest in discovering what a career in trading and software engineering at Jane Street could look like.
