Hi {{first_name || BSOC Community}}! 👋🏻

In this edition, we get honest about the small habits that decide whether a manager invests in you or writes you off, and what the reshaping of entry-level work means for the rungs above you.

We also meet Preston from the Sports team, and unpack what's really happening beneath Australia's cooling jobs market. Plus Europe over summer, a strategy scholarship worth chasing, and winter merch to keep your feet warm through exam season.

📈 AUSCORP CAREER ADVICE

How not to be the grad everyone complains about

Everyone in corporate is always listing the same grievances about new graduates. They’re too scared to pick up the phone. Turning up in trackies. Last in and first out. Asking about IT problems that a quick Google search would solve. Never putting their hand up for events or meetings that the company is literally paying for them to attend. It's easy to roll your eyes at this as another round of older workers grumbling about the young, and to be fair, every generation has copped the same complaints since forever. But whether or not the criticisms are fair, a lot of the people who decide your pay and your next opportunity care about these things and you don't have to agree with them to benefit from knowing it.

The good news is that the bar to stand out is very low. Pick up the phone even though you hate it, because everyone hates it and doing it anyway is how you stand out. Show up on time, dress a bit more formally than you think you need to, and say yes to the events, since that's where people actually get to know you. When you hit a problem, spend five minutes trying to solve it yourself before you ask, then ask a good question that shows you tried. None of this requires talent or long hours, just a bit of common sense and the willingness to look like you care, and caring visibly is rarer than it should be. Do these small things consistently and you won't just avoid the complaints. You'll become the grad your manager quietly decides to invest in.

🔎 THE ECONOMIC SCOOP

AI in Australia isn't producing mass layoffs. It's producing slower hiring, and specifically the removal of the entry-level roles that banks, insurers, telcos and professional services firms used to pass on to graduates. Jarden calls it the labour market "changing shape, not size".

AI-disrupted occupations are estimated to grow at just 0.5% a year against 1.2% for everything else, which works out to roughly 167,000 fewer workers over 5 years. Changes will fall on the bottom rung of the corporate ladder, because the tasks that used to train a junior are the first things to go.

We’re all set to get new work laptops as well. Fewer than 15% of laptops in Australian workplaces currently have a dedicated AI chip, and Gartner expects IT spend to grow 9% this year, so a large corporate device refresh is coming. AI tools have quickly shift from being optional to standard-issue on every machine.

We wrote on this a few months ago but the cohort coming up the ladder after you is thinning out. It means that the path to the roles above gets longer, and there's less support along the way. The jobs market context makes the timing worse. Australia added 76,000 jobs in June, but the underlying pace of hiring has more than halved over the past year, and underemployment is rising while forward indicators like job ads are softening.
