Hi {{first_name || BSOC Community}}! 👋🏻
If your uni experience has mostly taken place between Randwick, WAO and Sanctuary, this fortnight’s edition is your sign to do something about it. We're making the case for going on exchange and explaining how OS-HELP lets you put a trip overseas on your HECS tab.
Rishi from our philanthropy team is in the spotlight this week, while SAP is hiring paid interns on a two-year rotation if you want something real on your resume. There's also a Majors Expo coming up for anyone still pretending they know what they're majoring in and Annual BSOC ball tickets are live too. Doltone House. You already know.

📈 AUSCORP CAREER ADVICE

Go on exchange.
Most degrees offer it and if you can make it work, go. Full semester, short program, winter course, whatever you can manage. Sydney is a great city but it's a small world and spending your entire degree inside the same bubble is a missed opportunity. Most universities offer exchange scholarships or OS-HELP loans through HECS that cover flights and living costs, which means you're not paying upfront out of your savings. It's a government loan that sits on your HECS balance so that you can go and study abroad and live your best live. That's about as cheap as an international experience is ever going to get in your life.
Employers recognise the value of exchange too. Not because a semester in Copenhagen makes you smarter, but because it shows that you can handle unfamiliar environments, figure things out independently and plan your life more than 12 months ahead. Those are the same things they're trying to assess in a behavioural interview. Beyond the career angle, you'll meet people from completely different industries, backgrounds and countries who you'll stay in touch with for years. Once you're working full time with two weeks of annual leave and a rental lease, spending a month overseas for the sake of learning and meeting people becomes a lot harder to justify.

🔎 THE ECONOMIC SCOOP
A serious mental health claim at work costs about four times what a physical injury does, at a median payout of $67,400 against $16,300. It also takes far longer to come back from, with a median 35.7 weeks off compared to 7.4 weeks for a physical injury. Only half the people who take one are back at work within a year. For physical injuries it's 95%.

Source: Safe Work Australia, Macquarie Research, August 2026
That gap is why insurers are struggling. Serious mental health claims hit 17,600 in 2023-24, up almost 15% in a single year and 161% over the past decade, the fastest growth of any injury type. In NSW they now make up 12% of claims but 38% of the total cost of the scheme, and the state's insurer is holding only 85 cents for every dollar it owes.
"The average cost of a psychological claim in NSW nearly doubled in five years to $288,542."
The response has been to tighten who qualifies rather than address why the claims are happening so the same injury is now treated differently depending on which state you work in. NSW passed two rounds of reform in late 2025 and early 2026 to narrow the definitions and freeze premium rates, after modelling showed premiums climbing 36% by 2027-28 if nothing changed. Western Australia went the other way in mid-2024 and made psychological claims easier to make, and it's already showing up in what employers there pay.
